DescriptionPrinted in the 'Leader' on July 14, 1981, with a second sketch showing the interior.
Builder John Piercy and his wife Ineke were behind the project. The Rainbow name came from the proposed interior lighting.
In addition to the 900-square-metre main rink, the 1510-square-metre building would house a 156-square-metre learners' one, coffee bar (seen at right), disc-jockey booth skate-hire area and skate shop.
The floor was being poured in four-by-three-metre squares, and had to cure for several months before the plastic skating surface could be applied. Tenders for 80 (actually 18) timber roof trusses were being prepared.
The February 24 'Leader' had given details; the plans had been submitted for approval.
May 26; awaiting a building permit; all materials had been costed and ordered.
A September 8 picture showed the rear and side tilt-slab walls in place, and October 20 showed the roof trusses being placed. The September 8, 1981 'Leader' also reported hat the government was proposing to house all of lands and Survey's operations in one site, and was seeking suggestions from estate agents and property developers; about 4600 square metres would be needed for mapping operations, and 6000 total.
January 27, 1981; the rink was already in use, though not officially open, as carpark, kerbing and other details were not finished. Plastic had not been applied to the concrete as it was slippery and inclined to wrinkle.
Official opening by the mayor was on February 20
In succession the building housed map storage for Lands and Survey/Terralink, a Lifestyle gym, which moved to Queen Street, and StorageOne in 2016.
