Totara park residents were opposed to logging traffic. The council had considered four routes:
Via Three Skulls Road and Tacoma Drive;
Via Three Skulls road directly to Totara Park Road;
Via Karapoti Road and Akatarawa Road;
Via new road from McGhies Bridge to Karapoti Road and Akatarawa Road.
The first two options had been discarded.
A bridge crossing the Akatarawa River to Karapoti Road had been washed away, and two families on Karapoti Road who had used it wanted it replaced; this and associated upgrading of the road for logging would help Totara Park residents' case. The Regional Council had used a bulldozer to clear the old McGhie's Road, and a bridge to Karapoti Road had been built for $50 000.
In the October 22 'Leader' the Regional Council's engineer said a $500 000 bridge over the Akatarawa River would be 'a senseless waste', and that the Totara Park arguments were purely emotive.
On October 29 it was argued that if the McGhie's bridge had cost $ 50 000, an Akatarawa one should be possible for $75 000.
