The original letters are held in the Alexander Turnbull Library. These excerpts appear to have been compiled from notes taken by a researcher investigating early Upper Hutt history.

The excerpts cover the period from October 1861 to January 1862, although they are not presented in chronological order. They describe Margaret Herring's first impression of the Upper Hutt district, including an account of the journey from the Lower Hutt through what is now known as Taita Gorge. She describes the sparsely populated and heavily wooded character of Upper Hutt in comparison with the lower valley, and makes mentions her husband taking services at the Maori chapel at Whirinaki (present day Silverstream) and in a shop being used as a makeshift church in what was presumably Fortune Lane, the original town centre.
