Silverstream Hall, 246 Fergusson Drive
History
HistoryBegan as the Silverstream Social Club hall.
Used by Mawai Hakona Maori Club from near their beginnings; they probably moved to Orongomai Marae when it opened, around 1977.
The YMCA used the hall from November 1981, after Trentham Police Training College closed; they moved to the corner of King and Queen streets in June 1983.
Joanne Jones advertised a dancing academy in Silverstream in February 1986, but gave no address. It does not seem to have survived into 1987.
Natasha Brewer had been dancing since she was 3, and was accepted by the New Zealand School of Dance at 15; two years later she and Australian Vanessa Cook were dancers with the Sydney Festival Ballet Company, and simultaneously completed a one-year teacher's course at the Australian Royal Academy of Dance. After three years they were 20, when they opened the Variety Dance Centre in May 1993; her father, Richard, had bought the hall in 1992 to save it from possible demolition, and had refurbished it.
Natasha and Vanessa appeared together as principals in the first 1994 advertisement, on January 17; Vanessa was not in later advertising, and may have left earlier.
'Miss Natasha' ran the Variety Dance Centre for many years; it seems to have closed in 2017.
Zap Group, property carers, have taken over the frontage.
