AddBy: Lizzie Errington10th Oct 2024 11:20AMThe following recollections were shared on the Upper Hutt Heritage Facebook page on 3rd August 2024:
"I lived at 216 Fergusson Drive back then. Luckily we were upstairs above the shops. Never seen so much flooding in that area before. Many mud slips on the Hutt Motorway also. Made it difficult to get to Wellington." - Peter Stevens
"Remember it well. Our house in Stokes valley was flooded out." - Annette Hickling
"I've seen plenty of pics floating around of the big flood of December ' 76. I was living in Trentham at the time. Caught the bus to Wingate that morning to work. Walked to Wingate railway station later that arvo to get the train back to Trentham and waded through knee deep water to get there, lol." - Paul Foote
"I know it’s going back a bit but I can just remember the Hutt River over flowing and flooding the streets between Ferguson Drive and the river, then they built the stop banks." - Graeme Watson
"Graeme Watson, have we ever had a flood since the stop banks were formed? And how effective were they?" - Anton Joseph
"Anton Joseph, The only flood I can remember after the stop banks where erected was in the early 70s and it only effected the concrete works and gardens that used to be at moonshine bridge." - Graeme Watson
