Publication TypeNewsletterPublisherN.O.W Upper HuttPlace of publicationUpper HutDate of publicationFebruary 1975DescriptionFormed in 1973, at the height of the Women’s Liberation movement in New Zealand, the Upper Hutt Feminists were made up of local women who held meetings, workshops, public talks and consciousness raising events. They produced a monthly newsletter which included details of their activities as well as reports on conferences, debates, protests and the actions of other women’s liberation groups. Through the years they underwent a number of name changes, they started as N.O.W Upper Hutt (National Organisation for Women) but when in 1975 N.O.W Auckland indicated its desire to federate all groups using the N.O.W banner into a national executive, the members of N.O.W Upper Hutt voted to resist this “To ally ourselves formally with your group would, we feel, necessitate a more formal structuring of our group, as well as an allegiance to an external hierarchy, from which most of us would feel comparatively alienated. We are not prepared to accept this at the moment” . To avoid confusion and being misaligned with the new N.O.W structure, they subsequently changed the group’s name to the Upper Hutt Women’s Group; but by December 1976 they became the Upper Hutt Feminist’s.
