BiographyGordon was awarded an Upper Hutt Civic Award for his services as a fireman in May 1986; the 'Leader' article said he had joined the Silverstream 'Junior' Fire Brigade at 16, when most young men were serving in World War II; the 'Leader' printed a photo of the group on September 4, 1984. Gordon served at Silverstream for 27 years before moving to the Upper Hutt brigade; in total he served for 33 years. In that time, he had held all offices in the Hutt Valley association, 'a result of always helping out in time of need'. He was made the association's first patron in 1982, and a life member of both brigades.
He started the Hutt Valley Hamilton Indoor Bowls Tournament after leaving voluntary service.
He was clerk of course for both Trentham and Hutt Park racecourses for many years.
He retired as a travelling salesman in 1986.
