The candles were lit as part of a Council staff remembrance service and were left on public display in the Library with a book for members of the public to leave messages of condolence and support to the Muslim community of New Zealand.

On Friday 15 March an armed terrorist entered two Mosques in Christchurch opening fire, tragically killing 51 people and injuring a further 50, while they were attending their noon prayers.

In the aftermath, around New Zealand candlelight vigils took place, as well as people leaving flowers and messages of support at their local Mosques. Date Taken18 March 2019Geotagnot specified
