DescriptionThe trees had been threatened in 1979; the council's works committee cited blocked sewers and gutters, but the landscape officer, who had placed them on the council's protection register, had objected. The May 29 Leader reported that the council would decide; the following week, the committee was asked to reconsider.
On June 12 a cartoon showed a gum branch springing from a Maidstone Mall toilet.
The April 1, 1980 'Leader' reported more council discussion of the problem; cutting down a protected tree would establish a precedent for other trees.
