Bill Hyslop collection
A collection of photographs taken by Bill and Val Hyslop depicting Kaitoke Railway Station, trains, and affiliated people. Contains Rosemary McLennan's notes on the photos and a short biography of Bill and Val Hyslop. Rosemary McLennan's biography reads in part: 'Husband Bill Hyslop who passed away on July 27, 1999, worked with the railways as a signalman and was transferred to Kaitoke. Mrs Hyslop would catch the milk lorry or early goods train to work at Farell's shirt factory behind Hazelwoods in Queen St. The couple were newly married and their first child, Maurice, was bornat Braeburn Maternity Home in Victoria Street, Upper Hutt. Mrs Hyslop used to take him in his pram to Upper Hutt in the goods train guard's van. The Kaitoke Station was a refreshment stop on the way to the Summit and Rimutaka Incline.' The section of line on which this station was sited was opened in December 1877 and closed on 29 October 1955. The Refreshment Rooms were in operation at the station from the early days and closed in November 1952. (Information - Brian Pearce).
