Upper Hutt School
History
HistoryUpper Hutt Primary School first assembled on 11 April, 1864 in St Joseph's Church. Mr T. Sullivan was the first and only teacher of his 30 pupils. In 1866, Mr Daniel Carrick and Mrs Mary Ann Carrick had taken over teaching duties and the first dedicated school building was built on land donated by Mrs Hannah Barton (close to what is now 629 Fergusson Drive).
From 1878, due to the growing popularity of the school, the Rose of Sharon Hall (Built next to the school site in 1873) was rented as a classroom. On 13 August, 1879 a second school building was opened next door and the original 1866 building was kept as a temporary classroom and shelter shed until it was demolished in 1903.
By 1906 the site at Trentham and its buildings were deemed inadequate and the school was developed on its current site in Martin Street. The Martin Street location opened on 28 March, 1909. The 1879 building was dismantled and moved to the new site, but it was wrecked in a storm before it could be erected.
The Defence Act of 1909 required the training of junior cadets aged 12-14 and in 1910 the school opened a miniature rifle range. In wartime, St Hilda's Church hall was used as a classroom.
The school's assembly hall was opened in 1957
Much of this information comes from the 1989 book 'Evergreen is our valley: a history of Upper Hutt School, 1864-1989' by Dudley G. Hercock.
