HistoryThe Upper Hutt Pipe Band began in 1944 after a meeting on 15 August presided over by the mayor, James Blewman, and held their first dance on 29 November. Early members included Jim Davidson (the first pipe-major), Chas Harris (later secretary), R.G. McFarlane (treasurer), G. Wood (president), Douglas Wood and Tam Blewman.
In July 1946 the Leader reported that the band comprised 14 pipers, four side-drummers, a bass drummer and a tenor drummer (‘with prospects of another at an early date’) and a drum major. ‘This is as large a pipe band as there is in any part of Wellington, and the district is extremely fortunate in having such a band in the making.’ The band was working to raise funds for uniforms and equipment, and from the late 1940s held an annual street day (featuring ‘stalls well stocked with Scottish delicacies, specially made for the occasion’) to raise funds.
The 1947 AGM noted a busy year, including performances at Silverstream Hospital and at functions in Wellington and Lower Hutt; in 1954 the band performed at the royal visit by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, as well as at the A & P show and the Anzac Day parade.
Their 25th jubilee celebrations were held at the Hapai Club in 1969.
