DescriptionThis boiler was made by a John Thompson subsidiary in Hamilton; it was rated at 35 000 pounds/16 000 kg per hour from and at 100 degrees C; noticeably less at its working pressure of 250 pounds per square inch (17 bars).
The gas-or-oil burner has gone, and the front of the boiler has been uncovered. Air from the burner came from a blower at bottom right. Originally the outside chimney was 1.8 metres bore, but in 1972-73 the bore was reduced to 0.9 metres; the gas would move four times as fast, and hopefully it would send any smoke up through the atmospheric inversion layer; friction per foot would be five times what it was, so a fan was necessary.
The burner sends its flame and hot gas the length of the boiler through the large fire tube; the flue gas would come back to the front through the arc of tubes closest to the fire tube, and then go back to the chimney via the larger group of tubes on the outside.
