DescriptionThis boiler was made by a John Thompson subsidiary in Hamilton; it was rated at 35 000 pounds/16 000 kg per hour from and at 100 degrees C; noticeably less at its working pressure of 250 pounds per square inch (17 bars).
The near wall of the boiler and the multiple circular flue-gas tubes on that side have gone. Behind Paul Archibald is the fire tube which contained the flame produced by the gas-or-oil burner. Most of the near side has been cut away.
This tube has the greatest variations in temperature; the corrugations reduce the forces caused by expansion and contraction. They will also make it more difficult for the tube to collapse out-of-round under external pressure.
