DescriptionThere were three 84-inch (2134 mm) mills in Upper Hutt; this is one of the first pair, which had rolls 26 and 22.3 inches (660 and 556 mm) diameter, which were geared to run with a 3:4 surface speed ratio. The gears were later changed to give a 9:10 ratio. In this picture, the front roll, which was driven by a 150 horsepower (112 kilowatt) motor, is being lifted clear, complete with its two bearings and the gear which drove the back roll, at left. The gear which drove the back roll at the far end has been removed. The screws which adjusted the gap between rolls ca be seen at right.
The third mill, delivered around 1971, had two 660 mm rolls, and improved cooling, with multiple water passages near the surface; the old mills were simply sprayed at the top with water, which filled the bottom half and ran out through the end shaft.Date Taken2007
