DescriptionThere were three 84-inch (2134 mm) mills in Upper Hutt; this is one of the first pair, which had rolls 26 and 22.3 inches (660 and 556 mm) diameter, which were geared to run with a 3:4 surface speed ratio. The gears were later changed to give a 9:10 ratio.
The row of pneumatic cylinders operate rotary knives, some of which were notched to leave material uncut; for some applications rubber was pulled from the side of sheet around 600 mm wide, one 75 mm strip at a time. The outgoing strip first went under the serrated rollers, which could be lowered to force a joint together, then diverted under the bright roller into a detergent mixture, and then raised to the top level of a 'festooner', where it would be cooled by fans and evaporation; the detergent residue would stop layers of stacked rubber from sticking togetherDate Taken2007
