DescriptionMuch of the machinery had cast-iron bases to improve alignment, and such bases were typically bolted to massive concrete foundations, usually around 3 feet/90 cm deep and wider then the actual machine involved. The iron base might also be surrounded with concrete, up to floor level A line of three 60-inch mills around 4 metres wide might be 16 metres long, with its motor and gearbox, and 2.6 metres wide.
