DescriptionThe 40-inch Bag-o-Matics were made under licence from McNeil by Francis Shaw and had appeared in the mid-1960s; they were no longer wanted. Visible in the picture:-
Front and centre; one of two links which raised and lowered the top beam; they could withstand 300 000 pounds/136 tonnes each.
At far right, a pair of moulds with forged aluminium shells.
Left of the moulds, a pair of units which carried steam-heated platens; the units are resting on the screws which adjusted the upper platens' heights to match mould thickness, and then reduced the gap even further, so that the moulds were held shut against steam pressure.
In the middle of the/picture, a pair of motor-driven crank gears which drove the links up and down, opening and closing the press.
