This is a photograph of Ka-960 at Paekakariki. The locomotive was built in NZ and most of its components were constructed at Hillside Workshops, Dunedin - these were then shipped to Hutt Workshops at Woburn where final assembly took place. Ka-960 entered service in March 1939 as a coal-burner, in which form it is seen here. It was converted to burn oil in October 1947. In December 1949 - in conjunction with other work, and to ease access for maintenance - the 'streamlined' casing (as it is often referred to) was removed. The photograph of Ka-960 as built is likely to have been taken in the early 1940s, as smaller parts of the 'streamlined' casing were removed quite early from most of the Ka class. The locomotive was written off in September 1966 and subsequently scrapped. It's quite likely this image is also from NZR Publicity Dept
