It is the slightly larger mode- the S class.
The front headstock shows this to be S 2 (later S 213) and other sources* stae that the photo is taken at Cross Creek C1886

PhotographerBurton BrothersDescriptionS class locomotive (S-2); single Fairlie type, used between Wellington and Summit.

0-6-4 wheel arrangement; built by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol, England, in 1880 - maker's no. 1280/80. This locomotive entered service on the Wellington Section on 17 July 1882 as S-2. In the renumbering of 1890 it became S-213. It later worked in the Wanganui area and was written off in March 1927.

The Fairlie locomotives' principal design feature was the power-bogie; the driving wheels were not rigidly attached to the frame as with a conventional locomotive. In New Zealand this type was well suited to sections of line with tight curvature, an abundance of which existed on the line from Upper Hutt to Summit.

A double Fairlie locomotive was double-ended with a centre-cab, two boilers, and two sets of driving wheels.

S213 was the second of a batch of seven built 1880-1881, builder's numbers 1279-1285. They came into service from April 1882 to May 1887. Three were sold to Western Australian Government Railways in 1891; one was withdrawn in March 1922, and the other three in March 1927.

The R and S class single Fairlies were similar; the S was 36 tons to the R's 30, carried two tons more water, and had 7700 pounds tractive effort, compared with the R's 6900.Date Takenc1886 Last edited by: Brian J. Pearce
