The trio had visited Fergusson Intermediate and St Patrick's College the previous week.
The Turnovsky Trio, founded in 1991, was this country’s first all New Zealand-born and educated full-time professional chamber music ensemble. It was named after Fred Turnovsky (1916-1994), a Wellington industrialist and generous patron of the arts, particularly chamber music.
Upper Hutt's Sam Konise, of Samoan descent, had been awarded a Jack McGill scholarship in 1989, and had been Young Musician of the Year in 1990. In i99i he was made a national recording artist by Radio New Zealand's Concert Programme and had won an AGC Young Achiever's Award; he was currently a scholarship student at the san Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he was completing his Bachelor of Music degree.
Eugene Albolescu was a New Zealander of Romanian origin; Christopher came from Christchurch.
As a fifth former, Sam Konise was accepted into the National Youth Orchestra with sixth-form percussionist Lance Philip in 1985 ('Leader', June 25). In 1985 Sam won sports blues in athletics and basketball, and a service gold medal, at Upper Hutt College.
