DescriptionCaption: Sister Mary Peter is the convent's oldest Sister and she can claim to be both one of Upper Hutt's oldest and newest residents. She is believed to be the oldest Sister of Mercy in New Zealand and moved to Upper Hutt from St Mary's Wellington just this year. She entered a convent in Westport in 1916 after teaching for 10 years and has been a teacher, mainly of music, for most of her life. She turns 103 next March, still writes to her family and is a keen follower of Parliament, rugby and cricket.

Printed in greyscale in the 'Leader' on 12th December 1989.

She was pictured again on April 2, 1991, receiving flowers and a kiss from St Joseph's junior schoolgirl Elizabeth Clegg, on her 104th birthday, March 25, 1991, and again on March 29, 1993, at 106, March 27, 1996, at 109, and April 24, 1996; she had died on April 17.
The report mentioned her 75years' service, and that being anointed by Pope John Paul II during his New Zealand had been the highlight of her life. Two years earlier, she had said she was looking forward to Heaven, and wondered why she was kept waiting so long.
