Queen Street, No. 37- 41; The Keg installs an eye-catching 900 litre French oak keg.

DescriptionCaption: The Keg (No. 37) in Queen Street which has recently installed this eye-catching 900 litre French oak wooden keg. Originally a Cognac keg, it is 50 years old and was used for importing cognac. The keg was later purchased from a winery in Henderson.
The Keg had been in business for a year. Its initial name was the Wine, Spirit & Beer Keg; it was owned by Bruce and Jackie Svenson, and managed by Barry McNaughten, who had previously run the Wine Keg. Wine Keg (1980) had opened in Main Street, and moved to Maidstone Mall in mid-July 1981.

Printed in greyscale in the ‘Leader’ on December 3, 1991. If the caption gave the Keg's street number as 41, it was wrong.

The Upper Hutt Foodbank used the building for eight years, until the building was sold to the Salvation Army in February 2003; they moved in on May 24. The Foodbank moved into a Council building in Logan Street; the Community Gallery was about to be succeeded by Expressions.

The Salvation Army family store occupied the former King's Pharmacy building (No. 41) at right. Pauline Bennett's 'Cliffs Electrical& Lighting' had moved from Maidstone Mall to the far end of that bulding in April 1982).

In the April 15, 2015 'Leader' the current owners, husband and wife Ray and Cheryll Bonner announced that they were closing the store; the building would re-open as a medical centre associated with the Queen Street pharmacy (not the King's, which was long gone, but the one visible in the background.
Patients of the Fergusson Drive Surgery and Doctor Michael Dunn's Queen Street Surgery (in Criterion Lane) were advised by letter in September; the new Queen Street medical would have five doctors, four nurses, and Inform Physio would also be there, and evening clinics would be open, beginning in November/December.
Pharmacists Doug Fargher, and John MacDonnell were behind the project; John had the Queen Street Pharmacy, according to a September 23 'leader' article.Date TakenNovember 1991Geotag^[1]StreetView camera position Last edited by: Don McLeod
