DescriptionCaption: Wellington's largest sawmill - which is based in Upper Hutt - forms the hub of Parapine Timber New Zealand Limited.

The Parapine Group emerged with the purchase of Paraparaumu Timber and Hardware in 1970 and followed - starting from scratch - the company formerly named Maidstone Park Timber.

With the success of Maidstone and the continual delays in receiving products, the opportunity was recognised to commence a processing unit that could service these two retail outlets. Consequently Parapine Timber Products was started in 1976 to supply framing timber and finger jointed products.
A sawmill was set up on the adjacent former 'Vibrapac' concrete-block plant, which closed on March 31, 1980; it was announced in the March 26 1985 'Leader' by the directors, Doug Reid and Gary Wells.

Pictured: Parapine production controller Robert Boot with a pile of logs from the Levin area ready for processing. Their future is boxing timber for export to Japan where they will be made into pallets.

The sawmill changed ownership, and later closed; almost all traces have gone. The building at right is a new one being built in 2015 for Zip Wholesalers, making a return to Upper Hutt; they had had premises in Goodshed Road, but closed them (around the turn of the century?).Date TakenJuly/August 1991Geotag^[1]the vacant site Last edited by: Don McLeod
