Ōrongomai Marae 1999; Kōhanga Reo pioneer Hariata (Harriet) Jaspers, with special award from Māori Queen Dame Te Atairangikaahu.

DescriptionCaption: One of the founders of Ōrongomai Marae's Kōhanga Reo, Hariata (Harriet) Jaspers, has been honoured with a special award from Māori Queen Dame Te Atairangikaahu.

Mrs Jaspers is pictured here with three of the youngsters currently at the kōhanga reo (from left), Teejay, Armani and Rhyannah Roberts, who are leaving to live in England.

The award was presented at the National Trust in Wellington to Mrs Jaspers and seven others for their early kōhanga reo work around New Zealand.

She and the late Mere King were the two senior tutors (kaiako) when the kōhanga reo began in November 1982. It also had two helpers (kai-awhina). However, they all came from separate parts of the country and had learned different dialects which created quite a bit of fun when they had to speak only in Māori.
