Records from the WRC that have been stored in the roof of the grand stand. They were infested with silverfish and covered in bird guano. In November 2007 a team from Upper Hutt City Library appraised the material and preserved a lot of it. It had to be frozen for two weeks at -20 degrees to kill the insects. The majority of the collection is now stored off site as the quantity of material is too large for the Community Archive to store. To access this information a minimum of three days is required to retrieve the requested information from storage.

Scope & contentThe WRC Archive includes bound volumes from the earliest days of the Club's formation, photographs, bound and unbound serials, 16mm movie film and other items.

Provenance

HistoryThe Wellington Racing Club began racing at Hutt Park but moved to Trentham at the beginning of the 20th century. A scheme for the development of 230 acres at Trentham was put to the management committee in August 1904. The first Wellington Cup was raced in 1906. At Trentham in January 1928 Phar Lap was sold to Australian interests where he went on to a stellar racing career, including the 1931 Melbourne Cup and the 1932 Agua Caliente Handicap in Tijuana.

This material is now awaiting further processing, including fumigation, removal of damaged volume covers, etc.
Approximately 20 linear metres of other records require careful inspection. These comprise bundles wrapped in brown paper and string, dated and named, covering the period circa 1930 to circa 1960. The bundles are infested with silverfish. Large numbers of the bundles are unlikely to be of interest or worth preserving. Other loose-leaf and foldered material from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s require inspection.
A small wooden box of 16mm film (circa 12 rolls) requires transfer to the Film Archive.

01/06/2015 Staples and other corroding metal fixtures removed from correspondence and replaces with plastic-coated paperclips and brass pins.Custodial historyThe WRC Archive has been housed in the roof space of the Public Stand since the 1960s. Broken windows and roof leaks have exposed it to rain and roosting pigeons. In early 2006 the existence of the Archive was brought to the attention of the Community Archives. After an initial appraisal by the Archivist, a report on the condition and significance of the archive was tabled at a meeting of the WRC Board who agreed on the need to preserve it. As at 1/03/2006 the WRC Archive is being processed for deposit in the Community Archive. 9/03/2006 National Library have been approached for advice on conservation of the archive. The archive's large collection of bound and unbound racing journals are being offered to the Alexander Turnbull Library . 6/07/2006 NLNZ and ATL staff have viewed the Archive. Serials Collection staff have removed a small number of bound serials; the National Preservation Office has advised on conservation methods; the ATL Curator of Mss has advised on selection of material for preservation.
