Trentham racecourse

History

HistoryTrentham racecourse opened in January 1906. The Wellington Racing Club had purchased 234 scrub-covered, boulder-littered acres at Trentham in 1904. The club had earlier raced at Hutt Park, and before that at Burnham Water, Miramar, but the new site offered more space, as well as easier access due to the nearby railway line.

The first race held at the new racecourse was the Anniversary Handicap in January 1906.

Three stands were erected from 1922, two of which are still standing today. The racecourse was used by the military during both world wars, including as the Wellington Racecourse Hospital in the Second World War.

In 1950 the club bought a further 190 acres.

National yearling sales were held at Trentham from 1927 to 1987 - including, in 1928, the sale of the colt who was to reach international fame as Phar Lap.

Royal visitors to the racecourse have included the Queen in 1953 and 1970, and the Queen Mother in 1958.

Trentham racecourse today is set on 67 hectares of grounds, and hosts 12 race days each year.
