Location of former Newton Street; east bank of Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River, upstream of Moonshine Bridge.

Details

DescriptionSatellite map superimposed with cadastral lines indicating the former location of Newton Street. This street was located in what is now Whakatiki Park; the dwellings on it were abandoned in the late 1940s following repeated flooding. Information from handwritten annotations present on another version of this map have been added here. An accompanying sheet includes the following reminiscences:

Bruce Hanson recalls:
- Newton Street wasn't a formed road. It had a metal surface which used to be graded from time to time.
- Pop Bromby had horses and a couple of stables in Newton Street.
- Len Wimms had a little metal yard in Newton Street. He used to get metal out of the river and store it in this yard.

Maxine Hanson recalls:
- I lived at 354 Main Road, Upper Hutt (opposite the Telephone Exchange), from 1943-1963. Our mother used to take us three kids down to the river for swims (we'd walk there and back).
- I can recall there being a couple of old carriages on land nearest the river side of Newton Street and during summer you could buy icreams and drinks there.
