St. John's Anglican church, Trentham
History
HistoryThe first clergyman in Upper Hutt was the Reverend John Edward Herring, who arrived at Christmas 1861, and stayed with the Barton family and gave a Maori service the following Sunday at Whirinaki (where St Patrick's College now stands), and second service in what would be Fortune lane. His first job was to burn off the bush and fence a paddock for his horse; he described the ground, covered with branches and felled trees before burning as looking 'as repulsive and desolate a sight as possible'. The parish was huge; the first baptism was in Porirua in March 1862. The first recorded burials were in 1862. John Herring later became vicar of Lower Hutt and eventually went to Australia; he was succeeded by Amos Knell within a decade; he later became headmaster of the Native School at Otaki.
John Edwin Blackburne, 1882-1885, married Christina Cruickshank, of the sawmilling family.
Archdeacon Pearson was succeeded by Anthony Reade Gardiner.
The June 27, 1978 'Leader' reported that Archdeacon Pearson had been appointed Foundation Patron of the Friends of St Johns Trentham Trust, at their second annual meeting; he was writing a history of the church.
The new foyer was described in an article accompanying an architect's drawing in the June 18, 1985 'Leader'. It was intended for completion in the 125th-anniversary year.
The Reverend Ray Ladd celebrated 40 years in he ministry on December 21, 2001; an article followed in the January 23, 2002 'Leader'.
The Fergusson Drive lych gate incorporates a war memorial plaque; its wording is 'This gate is erected to the glory of God and in memory of those members of the Church of England from Trentham Upper Hutt and surrounding districts laid down their lives in the Great War August 1914-November 1918'.
Archdeacon T V Pearson left in February 1978 after 14 years in Trentham and 41 years in the ministry. Rather than retire, he took the position of assistant curate at two Rotorua churches in a team ministry.
Before he left, he contributed material for a pair of articles in the February 28 'Leader', as the first of a series which may not have continued; there was nothing in March; the articles are the sources of much of the above.
