Jacqueline Doris Svenson
Biography
BiographyJacqueline Pelling was born in England in 1945. At the age of 14 she was awarded a medal for saving a 21-year-old man in the Thames. She came to New Zealand, aged 15, and trained as a hairdresser.
Her wedding at St John's was the last conducted by Canon Smallfield before he retired at the end of August 1964.
Bruce Svenson is listed as an agricultural contractor in the 1972 electoral roll. Jackie is listed as 'married'; her 'Peaches' hairdressing business presumably started later. The business was passed to her daughter, Kim, when Jackie became manager of a Coastlands salon in 1993.
The Heretaunga Players collection in 'Recollect' has her in pictures from 1970 and 1974.
She was a keen sportswoman who enjoyed netball, swimming and javelin throwing. Interested in learning bagpipes and drums, she bought a set.
Bruce owned 'The Keg', an off-licence liquor store; initially in The Mall, it moved from there at the end of 1990 or beginning of 1991 to 37 Queen Street; their son Carl was pictured working there in September. A 900-litre wooden keg was mounted above the veranda in November 1991.
Financial circumstances forced them to leave Upper Hutt.
Jackie died after a long battle with cancer. The funeral was held in St John's.
Information mostly from the July 31, 1996 obituary, and electoral roll.
