Brown Owl School (earlier known as Mungaroa and Te Marua School)
History
HistoryThe school went through three name changes over the course of its operational life:
Mungaroa – 1879
Te Marua – 1913
Brown Owl – early 1970s
The school also occupied two different sites. Refer to the geotag on the left side of this page which shows the locations of the two sites.
The school officially opened on the 2 June 1879 as Mungaroa school. The land for the school was donated by Mr John Benge. The former site is now occupied by the Benge Memorial Hall.
Although no verifying documentation has be found, it was reported that the original school building sustained major damage in a 7.2 earthquake on the 24 June 1942 and subsequently had to be demolished and rebuilt (this is now the Benge Memorial Hall).
Over time, enrolment numbers dwindled and due to this decline, funding also decreased. In 2002 the Board of Trustees sent letters to parents advising them that the school would officially close in early 2003.
