It used to be quite a big thing to get Pizza Hut for dinner, and the prices matched-a jumbo pizza would set you back $31 in 1991, so probably close to $60 in today’s money.'

A picture of a similar building was printed in the April 15, 1980 'Leader'; the town planning committee had approved a Slater Wilmshurst proposal for a 94-seat restaurant and 33 car parks. One of three totara trees on the site would be saved. The May 6 'Leader' reported council approval.

The opening was announced in a five-page spread in the December 15, 1980 'Leader'.

The Pizza Hut building was put up for sale by auction in June 2000; the lease had four years to run, but Pizza Hut would probably move to a former Eagle Boys premises on Main Street; 'Leader', June 7.

Originally built as a Pizza Hutt restaurant (later, self-service); then enlarged to form The Hut sports café, which opened in May 2002. Later occupants of the extension were Lollipops Educare.

Successive occupants of the original part; in 2012 a combined cafe (The Funky Monkey) and child-care centre, then Viveré (with a final accent) Café; Jovan's (Italian) Kitchen replaced the café section in March 2016.
