By: Brian J. Pearce28th Jan 2014 11:23PMThis building was constructed in 1942 for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand who used it for Note Office operations until 1972. An incinerator facility in the yard to the rear of the building was in regular use over the years to dispose of used banknotes.

When the Reserve Bank moved out of the building it was taken over by the Department of Social Welfare; the September 27, 1977 'Leader' printed pictures and an article about the Electronic Data Processing Centre and its staff of 24 women.

At one stage, the buildings on this site (south side, west end) were used by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for recording and destroying used banknotes. Built in 1942 and sporting large furnaces for destroying the notes, it was offered for sale by auction, but initially failed to reach the reserve.
It was later taken over by the Department of Social Welfare; the September 27, 1977 'Leader' printed pictures and an article about the Electronic Data Processing Centre and its staff of 24 women. it was sold in 1972.

Two-storey weatherboard building located on Queen Street next to Upper Hutt Produce.
The May 5, 1992 'Leader' reported that the Upper Hutt Foodbank had moved into the building.
Demolished and replaced by Smugglers liquor carpark in early 1997; later renamed 'Liquor King'. Smugglers refurbished and extended a concrete-block building at the rear of the section.
