DescriptionPrinted in colour in the ‘Leader’ on April 19, 2000.
A new foyer and a free-standing bell-tower incorporating the statue of St Joseph which had been under the eaves at the church's southern gable were opened and blessed by the head of the Catholic church in New Zealand, Cardinal Tom Williams, on April 16, 2000 (Palm Sunday).
The bell had first been rung in 1870 by Mary Brown, wife of early settler James Brown; it had last rung in 1957 (presumably because it was then found to be unsafe).
The 'Leader' of April 12 had printed a corrected list of the people who would ring the bell; Kevin Brown (with no E), his son Blair (not Nigel), and grandson Callum, pictured here; the picture named them.
