DescriptionApparently, HIBS had won the Russel McVeagh Schools Debating Championship the previous week; other local competitors were his schoolmate David Dewar and St Patrick's College's Ravin Ramasinghe.
New Zealand had never missed a semifinal in the overseas secondary schools' debating competition, and had won it three times out of 12.
A greyscale image was printed in the Upper Hutt Leader on 23/8/2000.
He was in a New Zealand team which won all eight preliminary rounds in the world School Debating Championships in Singapore in 2002, before being knocked out by Kuwait in a debate on banning genetic screening; the Kuwaitis were biology students. At that stage, New Zealand was second to Scotland. Ireland came first, Australia second, eventually. This had been New Zealand's best placing in such events.
