A greyscale image was printed in the 'Leader' on August 8, 1989. It was repeated on August 29; the hand-written 'Leader' index confirms that she had died. That issue is missing from the library's bound volume, so no more details are available.

She was the widow of George Thomas, who had been elected mayor in 1968, resigned in ill health in March 1970, and collapsed and died in October while travelling between Picton and Nelson; he had worked at the Dunlop tyre factory from 1948, becoming production manager in 1958, and assistant to the works director in 1964; he resigned when he was elected mayor.

Maureen was elected city councillor in 1986. She had worked as a welfare officer, and was a private-kindergarten director and professional florist, and was a foundation member of the executive of the N.Z. Retail Florists Association, ('Leader' advertisement, September 20, 1986).
