Biography
BiographyStudied medicine at Otago University. Graduated, 1949
House surgeon, Wellington and Dannevirke.
In Upper Hutt since 1951, as a newly-wed; first in Golders Road, then with Doctor Rainey in Wilkes Arcade; they were later joined by Doctor Ackroyd.
Obstetrics and gynaecology training, Auckland Women's Hospital, 1955, and in London.
Returned to Upper Hutt in 1958(?).
Medical officer in charge, Elderslea Maternity Hospital, when it opened in 1971; he had played a large part in getting the Wellington Hospital Board to establish it. Later, he was consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, at Hutt Hospital.
One of three doctors who set up 'Trinity House', next to Gethings Motors. When more doctors came to Upper Hutt, Trinity House could not accommodate them; Doctor Heginbotham presented a paper on improving health services to the council , and out of that came the Upper Hutt Medical Centre.
'Not retiring', June 17, 1986. Retired (at least from Elderslea) in December 1987, aged 65.
Two terms on the Wellington Hospital Board.
Royal Humane Society bronze medal, 1952, for attending a miner injured in a Rimutaka tunnel rockfall.
Appointed to the Abortion Supervisory Committee in December 1980; viewed as a non-liberal. He and Doctor S C Hawe of Timaru had replaced doctors Bruce Grieve and Heather Thomson; as a result, the third member, Mrs Vivienne Boyd, had resigned.
Involved in establishing the Upper Hutt Club in the former Catholic presbytery.
Past president of he Heretaunga Probus Club, and Upper Hutt Chamber of Commerce.
Also involved with the Order of Saint John.
Learned Mandarin; AFS study tour of China; sponsored Zhimin Yu, who spoke at his funeral, as his son.
Appeared in a 1997 series of 'Why I (heart) Upper Hutt' features in the 'Leader'; picture was reprinted with the April 22, 1998 obituary, which supplied most of the information above.
