DescriptionThis is one of a set of three 'Leader' photos (rubberworkers' union president John Forsyth and secretary Roger Brott, and engineers' union organised Phil Bosworth); they are marked 11/87, but were not printed.
South Pacific Tyres had announced the end of tube and truck-tyre production, with the loss of 120 out of 480 factory jobs; it was reported in the November 10 'Leader'.
John Forsyth's and South Pacific tyres chief executive Eric Rainsford's comments were printed on November 17, Bill Jeffries, M P's on the 24th, and Phil Bosworth's on December 1.
John, a Scot, had been a merchant seaman 1946-1956, then joined India Tyres, a Dunlop subsidiary,at Inchinnan, near Glasgow.
By 1960 it was near to closing; John joined the crew of a ferry being delivered to Indonesia, and then made his way to New Zealand, joining Dunlop New Zealand in 1960. He later became union president.
He retired in 1965.
With Don McLeod, he helped organise a 2013 reunion initiated by Cyril Milne.
In 2105 he was vice-president of the Merchant Navy Association.
