Details
DescriptionPrinted in the 'Leader' on November 24, 1981. The area, downstream of the Silverstream bridges, had suffered from rubbish being dumped there instead of at the landfill.
The Te Waka e Manaaki Trust was clearing and levelling the land under the Labour Department's contract employment scheme. It was hoped that after completion in May the four-hectare nursery could produce 10 000 willow poles a year for flood protection of Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River's banks. The article explained the 'layering' technique used.
A grey-scale image printed in the February 9, 1982 'Leader' showed a bulldozer clearing scrub, with a train on the Silverstream railway bridge.
