DescriptionThese black-and-white images were printed in the 'Leader' on June 13, 1989; the perspective view of this cable-stayed timber bridge was repeated on September 19; estimated cost was $380 500, and tenders would be called.
All proposals used cable-stayed construction; these both had pylons in the river; the final solution was printed in August 1993, and its single tilted pylon was seated on the westethern riverbank.
Plans for a bridge had been drawn in 1976, when a swimming pool had been proposed for Harcourt Park; the bridge would also carry an alternative water supply for Totara Park; cost was estimated at $50 000. A group of Totara Park women organised a petition in April 1982, by which time estimated cost was $106 000.
