The December 4, 1990 'Leader' had announced the result and the $35 000 prize, after the November 29 Michael Fowler Centre concert.
Patrick Bowles wrote a review of a May 17 Civic Hall concert in which Sam had played, with his teacher, Jan Tawroszewicz, and the Wellington Regional Orchestra.
Sam had played a Vivaldi concerto, Jan a Bach concerto, and they had combined for the Bach concerto for two violins.
The picture was repeated on September 24; Sam, 21, had received an AGC Young Achievers Award, and was studying at the San Francisco Conservatoire.
In the March 3, 1992 'Leader' he appeared again; he was to play with pianist John Morrison in a benefit concert at Heretaunga College, on the sixth; one of a series raising funds for Kiwis to travel to play in the World Orchestra.
As a fifth former, Sam Konise was accepted into the National Youth Orchestra with sixth-form percussionist Lance Philip in 1985 ('Leader'). In 1985 Sam won sports blues in athletics and basketball, and a service gold medal, at Upper Hutt College.
