Details
DescriptionCliff Pepperell had started in Hazelwoods, and bought Charlie Anderson's menswear business in 1947. Cliff Pepperell Ltd later expanded into women's wear. The original building was demolished and replaced in 1974.
Pepperells announced their closing sale in the 'Leader' on October 15, 1991; this photo was one of a pair taken at the time, but not printed.
Selectrix printed pictures of three of their staff in 1990, and gave their address as 119-121 Main Street; they may have occupied part of the building, but had gone when this picture was taken.
Newbolds, electrical suppliers, had bought the building; Pepperells still had their Lower Hutt shop, Berringers.
At the time, Cliff's son Kevin Pepperell said he was not setting up another shop in Upper Hutt; but Pepperells reopened at No. 151 at the end of June 1992.
Cliff Pepperell died in !995, aged 84; the September 6 'Leader' printed an obituary and a portrait.
A Pepperell's Drapery in Merton Street advertised a summer sale of ladies' and children's wear and manchester in the February 2, 1966 'Leader'; the advertisen ment gave full details of how to find the shopping centre.
