DescriptionDefence already had land outlined in brown; they would gain the pink area from Corrections, to give an increased safety zone alongside the rifle ranges.
Corrections would receive areas marked in yellow, and Conservation the blue area.

In the same issue, the Army announced that it had formally suspended firing on nine of its 40 live-firing ranges, and a few days later added that Trentham, Gisborne, Hastings and Dunedin would close permanently, to the consternation of the National Rifle Association. Further correspondence and a map of safety templates appeared the following week.
The December 27 'Leader' reported that the Army had granted dispensation for the Ballinger Belt competition to be held in January, under Army supervision and with Army-verified ammunition.
The map was reprinted on February 28, 2001; planning officers had recommended that the council accept the proposals.
The August 3, 2005 'Leader' reported that the city council had bought land at the eastern ridgeline end of the range's 'firing template' and would lease it and some adjacent reserve land to the National Rifle Association. Funding had come from the Totara lodge and Quinn's Post community trusts. With the Association controlling all access, Ballinger belt and national competitions could continue as before.
