Cost would be about $400 000.
Work had started, with completion expected at about the end of October.
Unlike the early proposals, this version had no piles in the river bed.
The contractors were Johnstone Construction of Auckland.
Most of the construction would be done off-site.
Originally cable-stayed; later, replaced by solid rods.
Plans for a bridge had been drawn in 1976, when a swimming pool had been proposed for Harcourt Park; the bridge would also carry an alternative water supply for Totara Park; cost was estimated at $50 000. A group of Totara Park women organised a petition in April 1982, by which time estimated cost was $106 000.
