He had moved from the West Coast to Upper Hutt when he was 18, working at Wallaceville Animal Research before moving to TVL (Tasman Vaccine Laboratories, later Pitman-Moore) where he worked for almost 30 years before retiring because of poor health; he and his wife Pat had moved to the Kapiti coast about three years before he died, aged 59.
