Station emerges like a train from a tunnel
Upper Hutt's rebuilt railway station is taking shape. Greater Wellington Regional Council transport portfolio leader Paul Swain said that when the designer told him last year it would represent a train emerging from a tunnel, he told him he had been watching too many Grand Designs. Now the scaffolding has come down Swain can see it and the effect will be most dramatic at night, when backlighting will create an Impression of a train floating on hidden wheels. "I'll leave It up to others to judge whether it really does look like a train coming out of a tunnel but, for my money, the architect has done a great Job.'
The station opened to the public on November 23; some seating and a coffee kiosk were yet to be finished.
