Details
DescriptionThe original invader had been the German wasp; the common wasp had a black dot often connected to the black band at the front of each segment of the abdomen; the German wasps had separate dots (and the area where the dots appeared is not visible in the photo).
The common wasp fed on honeydew in beech forests, and attacked native insects (the article did not mention whether the German wasp might be similar or different).
The DSIR was asking for batches of 20 wasps to be sent for identification, so as to gauge the extent of the new invasion.
A greyscale image was printed in the 'Leader' on March 24, 1987.
