Reprinted on July 4, 2001; a three-person independent commission had been hearing submissions on Transit New Zealand's applications for planning permission.
In addition to loss of bush and deteriorating scenic views from across the valley, Transpower raised the possibility of dust making flashovers at Haywards substation more likely.
The dust issue was finally resolved at the end of August.
The October 17, 2001 'Leader' reported that the commission had given the green light; upgrading the hill road would take three seasons, possibly from 2001.
