DescriptionThe plan, printed in the May 16, 2001 'Leader' shows 36 former prison houses which Housing New Zealand had ought from Rimutaka Prison. Many were run-down and had been vandalised; 20 had been leased to the end of 2001 to Te Wananga O Whanake Rangataua and been made habitable for Korean students at CIT, which had now closed.
There would be public meetings at Silverstream School to discuss options.
The June 20 'Leader' said a joint venture was being proposed, with a mixture of Housing New Zealand and private housing, and Whitwell Grove's entrance to be enhanced.
The July 3, 2002 'Leader' announced the go-ahead. Housing New Zealand would remove the existing houses and sub-divide the area, with new roads and parks; the area would then be sold to Harwood Pacific Ltd, who would build 70 houses; 20 would be bought by Housing New Zealand at a pre-agreed price.
A picture of the first houses being removed was printed on October 2.
The July 20, 2005 'Leader' reported that Harwood Pacific, now renamed Associated Property Holdings, was negotiating with their partners, Housing New Zealand, about the sale of some sections; groundwork had long been completed, but no houses started; Gillies and Mark signs had briefly appeared on the site.
The August 3 'Leader' reported that tenders for 13 3-bedroom and 3 4-bedroom state houses would be advertised that week, and that Gillies that a consortium would buy the remaining land; Golden homes would build houses, and Gillies & Mark would be in charge of marketing.
Pinehill Crescent survives, but the other streets have gone; the area was completely rebuilt.
