The shapes shown in the proposal printed on May 30, 1994 were much more convoluted and tightly curved than those seen on the model; Brian Armstrong, a local specialist in ornamental ironwork, refused to tender for the job.
A June 7 cartoon suggested that the site would be the ideal place to disguise one of the new-fangled cellphone towers.
The July 4 'Leader' reported that the project had been 'axed' by the city council; public support was lacking, there was a $22 500 shortfall in funding, and no sponsors had been found.
